A Florida school bus driver has been suspended after she was recorded on cellphone video, texting while driving a bus with one hand, packed with students.
The footage was covered last Friday by Venus Cotto Silva's 14-year-old daughter, who recorded the Hillsborough County school bus driver allegedly looking down at her smartphone while driving the school bus.
Cotto-Silva said said that when the daughter showed her the video, she just couldn't believe it. "The scary part is, see how quickly she grabbed the wheel?" Cotto-Silva said, pointing to the video. However, a Florida law to ban texting while driving still goes into effect October 1, though bus drivers will be exempt.
The school district Called this a policy violation, by putting it clearly in a statement that; the driver was looking at her cellphone, which is a very bad distraction for any driver. The potential danger was even more greater because the bus was full of children.
The 14-year-old girl said that she was shooting this video with an intention of gathering some evidence on how the driver curses. However, the video appears to show the driver drifting into a wrong lane while texting. It appeared like the driver finally looked up from her phone and suddenly grabbed the wheel with both hands just in time trying to avoid traffic.
The suspended driver has not been identified.
Despite the driver's suspension, Cotto-Silva said that not only was she going to kill her self, she was also going to kill the children on the bus.
